CHAPTER 17

As Sebastian drove into Little Leaf Creek, the sight of people scattering in all directions made him slow down.

“What’s going on?” Cassie peered through the windshield to see a complete mess as two goats kicked up piles of snow.

“Oh, no.” Sebastian pulled over.

Before he could come to a complete stop, Tessa opened the door. She hopped out and hurried toward the goats who continued to frolic in the snow. “How did you two get out?”

Cassie and Sebastian were right behind her.

“Is this some kind of prank?” a woman on the sidewalk called out as she filmed Tessa attempting to catch the goats.

“Unfortunately, no.” Cassie held back a laugh as she dug into her pocket. “Boys. I have treats.” She tossed a few into the snow right in front of her.

The goats shifted direction the moment they heard the word and bounded through the snow toward Cassie.

“I might be able to grab one.” Sebastian stepped forward in an attempt to catch Gerry who raced toward the treats.

“No, Sebastian, don’t!” Cassie gasped as she watched the goats plow straight toward him.

“I can get him. I can.” Sebastian spread his arms wide.

“Sebastian, no.” Cassie tried to guide him out of the way just before Gerry could collide with his legs. As she did, Sebastian lost his balance which sent him backward, bottom first into a big pile of snow.

Gerry lunged forward in the direction of the treats as if he didn’t even know Sebastian existed.

“Cassie.” Sebastian laughed. “What were you thinking?”

“Sorry, I was thinking Gerry was going to knock you right on your backside.” Cassie took his hand and helped him to his feet. “He wasn’t going to stop until he got to those treats. I didn’t want him to hurt you.”

“Well, I ended up on my backside, anyway.” Sebastian chuckled as he brushed some snow off the back of his pants. “But thanks for the help.”

“It wasn’t exactly the heroic move I intended.” Cassie laughed.

“Got you.” Tessa grabbed on to each of the goat’s collars while they sniffed and searched through the snow for the treats. “I can’t believe they found a new way out. I might just have to put huge walls up to keep them in.”

“Once they have their new houses, maybe they’ll be more interested in staying at home.” Sebastian shook his head. “I’m sorry they’ve taken so long. They’re almost done.”

“I doubt it will change much, but I do appreciate your efforts, Sebastian.” Tessa began to lead the goats toward the truck. “Would you mind giving us all a lift home?”

“Not at all.” Sebastian opened the back of the truck.

“Then we can go tell Ollie about Peter,” Cassie said.

“I don’t want you driving if you don’t have to. My truck is the best option in this weather. I’ll drop you off at the police station on the way, so you can update Ollie on what we saw while I take the goats to Tessa’s.” Sebastian put the goats in the back of the truck.

“Thanks.” Tessa opened the door.
